Orofacial  Myofunctional Therapy

Orofacial myofunctional therapy can improve the oral health and overall well-being of children. Depending on the unique needs and condition, orofacial myofunctional therapy helps children learn to eat, breathe, sleep, and speak better.

Pediatric Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy

Orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT) uses guided exercises, stretches, and teaching techniques to improve the alignment, posture, movement, and tension of children's lips, tongue, teeth, and jaws. OMT treats various orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs) and related challenges, including;

  • Lip, tongue, and cheek ties (restricted labial, lingual, buccal frenula)

  • Dental alignment and health

  • Speech production

  • Abnormal mouth, tongue, and oral rest postures

  • Tongue thrust, reverse swallow

  • Swallowing, chewing difficulties

  • Poor nursing, difficulty transitioning to solid foods

  • Prolonged thumb/finger sucking and other poor oral habits

OMT is also essential to pre- and post-frenectomy treatment, helping children improve recovery time and outcomes from the surgical procedure.

Kids Can Do Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy

At Kids Can Do, OMT is always administered by fully licensed speech-language pathologists with advanced degrees. Our pediatric speech-language pathologists are specially trained in OMT and understand the vital relationship between structure and function.

Our whole-child approach to therapy begins with a comprehensive evaluation that includes information gathering, testing, and observation. After the evaluation is complete and it is determined that orofacial myofunctional therapy is needed, a customized therapy plan of care is designed. The care plan is based on a child’s unique profile, personality, and family needs.

  • Evaluation

  • Goals and objectives

  • Strategy and process

  • Clinic therapy sessions

  • At-home follow up

  • Progress assessment

Kids Can Do actively involves family and other caregivers in a child’s therapy. We believe open communication and a coordinated plan of care results in faster progress and more successful outcomes. Our therapists are always willing to explain the purpose and strategy of their therapy sessions and provide supplemental exercises and activities for home.

Working together for therapy that works.

Orofacial myofunctional therapy costs are often covered by insurance when prescribed by a dentist, pediatrician or other qualified medical professional.
