Continuing Education
Kids Can Do will be offering the following courses:
The Pediatric Brain: Functional Neuroanatomy and the Sensory Systems and Their Treatment Applications
Presenter: Janine Wiskind, M.S., OTR/L, CBIS
Date: August 24 & 25, 2012
Course Description:
This intermediate-level course will provide physical, speech, and occupational therapists with a deeper understanding of the complex multi-system involvement of the brain in movement, learning, and daily function. The instructor will use innovative and multi-sensory approaches to help participants relate the information to their therapeutic practice. The first day of the course will focus on neuroanatomy incorporating cerebral development, nervous system function and interconnectivity between all areas of the brain. The second day will concentrate on the sensory systems with a focus on the visual system. The visual system is often overlooked by both occupational and physical therapists. The instructor will demonstrate the importance of considering the visual system when assessing and treating vestibular and sensory dysfunction. Participants will review real life cases through video to augment understanding of the material. At the end of this two-day course, therapists will have a proficient knowledge of neuroanatomy and the sensory systems and walk away with treatment activities to enhance their current practice.
Course Objectives:
- At the completion of the conference, the participants should be better able to:
- List important aspects of growth and development in a normal brain and how it relates to pediatric dysfunction.
- Describe the functions of the cerebellum and basal ganglia and their role in learning, development and dysfunction.
- Understand the different types of memory and how they relate to patient function.
- Illustrate the visual, auditory and vestibular systems and why they are vital to memory and learning.
- Integrate the concepts discussed into patient treatment.
Suggested Audience:
The course is designed for occupational, speech and physical therapists who work with a pediatric population.
